A recent request from a friend on Facebook to see evidence of my efforts to date for Movember lead me to have a go at taking some self portraits.
I set my camera on a tripod next to the main window in the lounge and used a 430EX flash unit to lighten the shadows by bouncing off the wall on the other side of the room. I’m pleased with the overall exposure of the shots apart from the shadow from my head on the wall in the background. As for the clutter in the background, I have attempted to reduce its impact by blurring it out but I think this only works to a certain extent. The shots were taken using the Canon remote that allowed me to position myself in my chosen spot and fire off as many pictures as I liked without having to reset the camera each time. The hardest part of taking these shots was setting the focus beforehand without having a model to position in the chair whilst I set things up. Anyone with ideas on how to do this more easily than trial and error, let me know!
The philosophy behind Movember is to grow a moustache throughout the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health in general and male cancers in particular. For me, it’s a bit of a fun and I’ve tried to reflect this in the photos. I hope you enjoy them –
